Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
An freshly coined initialism came to light several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals such as paediatricians. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a child who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities has denied these accusations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
