Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
