Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
