Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his team can keep managing with fitness issues after revealing that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The Germany international has been out for months following knee surgery. Originally slated to be available sooner, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when advancing his recovery and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is considerably steadier and has more options,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This development creates a selection headache for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Linger

Further fitness issues surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably keep their places in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta feels the significant outlay on new players during the summer has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to handle such unavailability.

Questioned if a larger pool of players was aiding their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in some areas, and now the problems with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in different positions, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we are to fight at the top. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Addressing the complication previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to see him return. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, personally, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his character, his personality. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”
