Meteorologists have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are expected to be cold, meaning warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

The Mercury Expected to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather could to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is completely key.
