The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
