The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
